| About Spooney |
Albert Marino was born in Bucharest, Romania to a concert pianist and a jazz fanatic. He received classical training in violin and piano but his love for the Beatles led him to focus on the guitar. He wrote his first song at the age of 10.
Albert’s horizons were expanded with exposure to such songwriting greats as Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan, whose influence can be heard in his songs.
In 2006, now living in Austin and performing as Spooney, Albert released his first full length CD “Don’t Change a Thing.” One of the songs off the album, “Addicted to War,” received national airplay and was performed alongside folk-great Joan Baez.
After hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast region, Albert moved to New Orleans to assist in the relief efforts. There he collaborated with some local icons to record “Whiskey in the Coffee” in 2007. The new album sounds like “Leonard Cohen meets electric Dylan” with a spicy taste of New Orleans.
Albert is now back in Austin, promoting “Whiskey in the Coffee,” and is getting ready to start recording a new full length album in April.
